How to Pray

People often turn to prayer when they are in a crisis situation.  A failed relationship.  Financial problems.   Problems with kids.  A death of a loved one.  There are many different reasons people can come to God asking for help.

But what about those of us who want to develop more of a positive connection with God?  How do we go about making prayer a regular part of our life?

Well a good place to start is to follow a pattern for prayer that has been used by many thousands of Christians from many different time periods.  This pattern can be easily remembered by memorizing the four letters WNBA.  Each letter stands for a different part of your prayer.

W - worship.  Spend a few minutes beginning your prayer by worshiping God for who God is.  You could begin this by saying Good morning Lord.  Today I worship you for your ability to love so much.  I worship your strength, your ability to forgive, for the way you provide.

N - name your faults.  Just saying God forgive me for all my sins isn't enough.  Name specifics things that you have done wrong or perhaps things you didn't do that you should have.  Put a name on your faults and ask God to forgive you for them.

B - be thankful.  Thank God for all the good things he has done.  Say thank you God for my friends, thank you for the sunshine, thank you for my dog, thank you for my kids, thank you...  Whatever comes in your head.

A - Ask for help.  You can begin this part by asking God to help the ministry of your church, pray for your pastor, then ask God to help your family - pray for them by name, then ask God to help your friends - make your prayers specific for your friends, and finally ask God to help you.  There is nothing wrong with praying for yourself.  There is something wrong with only praying for yourself.

This pattern can help you develop a well balanced spiritual prayer life.
